Braun Strowman, a former WWE Universal Champion, was among the prominent names released by the company on Friday, May 2, 2025. This marked the second time WWE has released Strowman, following his initial departure in June 2021 before returning in September 2022. On the May 4, 2025, edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed the contributing factors behind the decision to release “The Monster of All Monsters” once again.
A primary factor cited was Strowman’s contract value relative to his position on the card. Meltzer reported hearing from internal sources regarding the financial aspect. “He is the one that the salary was high,” Meltzer stated. “One person told me that they felt he was being… he was paid more than how they were using him, I guess is the best way to put it, but salary played a part in this.” This echoes reports surrounding his 2021 release, where his multi-million dollar contract was also considered a key reason for his departure at that time.
In addition to the contractual considerations, Strowman’s physical performance following past injuries was also mentioned as a likely element in the evaluation process. Meltzer commented on Strowman’s in-ring work recently, stating, “…the reality of Braun Strowman is, is that ever since he had that hamstring injury, he’s… never been the same.”
Since the news broke, Strowman (real name Adam Scherr) has made a public, albeit non-verbal, acknowledgment of his departure. On May 3rd, he posted a picture to his account on X (formerly Twitter) depicting himself relaxing with a drink by a pool, which many interpreted as a cryptic or reflective response to the release. As of early May 4th, he has not made further detailed public statements regarding the release or announced any specific future plans within professional wrestling. His release means he is subject to a standard 90-day non-compete clause.
