Despite WWE’s recent acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, the company reportedly has no plans to use former World Heavyweight Champion Alberto El Patron (formerly Alberto Del Rio). According to a report from BodySlam.net, WWE’s stance on not working with El Patron has not changed.
The report states that WWE has not reached out to El Patron, given him no creative consideration for his character, and has not mentioned him in any future plans. This is despite the fact that his AAA contract now technically falls under WWE’s ownership.
WWE has reportedly already taken steps to distance itself from El Patron within the AAA product. This includes booking El Hijo del Vikingo to defeat him for the AAA Mega Championship, a title Vikingo recently retained at Triplemania Regia.
El Patron had two separate stints in WWE as Alberto Del Rio between 2009 and 2016. He remains a controversial figure in the industry, having previously faced aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault charges in 2020, which were later dismissed as there was a missing witness, who was the accuser.
To clarify some misinformation going around. This is what Alberto Del Rio was accused of. The case was dropped because "there was a missing witness." pic.twitter.com/ruC52LU7sa
