REPORT: WWE Scraps Massive ‘Dream Team’ Plan For WarGames

The babyface WarGames team at WWE Survivor Series will reportedly not feature both John Cena and Roman Reigns fighting alongside the already confirmed CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, and Jey Uso. During a recent Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed the lineup for the men’s WarGames match. After John Cena’s Intercontinental Title win in Boston changed plans for a match with Dominik Mysterio in San Diego, Meltzer speculated on a new direction.

“Now that Cena already beat Dominik for the title, I thought that means that match (Mysterio vs. Cena) isn’t happening in San Diego,” Meltzer said. “I figured, why not do Cena, Roman Reigns, Punk, Jey Uso, and Cody Rhodes, and make it like a dream team for the babyface team at WarGames. Now I can tell you that that’s not happening. I was told ‘not even close’.”

This new report contradicts plans that had been reported for the last month. Following Seth Rollins’ shoulder injury at Crown Jewel, which forced him to vacate the World Heavyweight Championship, WWE’s original plans had to be changed. However, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter subsequently reported that the “core concept” for the match remained, stating, “as of press time, the men’s WarGames match was still a Punk & Reigns team against The Vision-led team.”

The latest comments from Meltzer indicate that the plan to have John Cena and Roman Reigns team together, which was a cornerstone of the post-injury booking, is no longer in the cards. The speculation comes as WWE officially announced the Men’s WarGames match on the November 10 episode of Raw.

Raw General Manager Adam Pearce, with help from William Regal, confirmed the match will pit World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk, Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, and Jey Uso against Logan Paul and The Vision (Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed). The match is currently 3-on-3, with two partners for each team yet to be announced, confirming that the specific “dream team” Meltzer mentioned is not the current direction.
