REPORT: WWE Shifting Recruitment Focus Back To Independent Talent For 2026

WWE is reportedly pivoting its talent recruitment strategy for the upcoming year. After spending recent years focusing heavily on the “Next In Line” (NIL) program and recruiting college athletes with little to no wrestling experience, the company is now turning its attention back to the independent scene.

According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE plans to hold a substantial number of tryouts specifically for independent wrestlers throughout the year. Meltzer described the move as a strategic shift, noting, “The company will be holding a significant amount of tryouts this year with indie talent and they’ve done another about-face (this always happens) regarding less college athletes and more indie talent.”

Regal And Sapolsky Scouting The Indies

The report indicates that two key figures are spearheading this initiative. William Regal and Gabe Sapolsky are reportedly tasked with searching the independent circuit for prospective signees. Both men have extensive history in scouting and developing talent, with Sapolsky having a deep background in the indie world from his time with Evolve and Ring of Honor.

Meltzer also outlined the specific criteria WWE is looking for in this new wave of recruits. The company is prioritizing look and verbal ability. “They are looking for people with the right kind of body and want people who can do promos,” Meltzer reported.
