WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio appeared to suffer an injury during his match against Austin Theory.
The incident occurred in the closing moments of the match. Mysterio was clutching his right shoulder immediately after taking Theory’s stomp finisher. Following the pinfall, a brawl broke out involving members of Theory’s faction, The Vision. However, referee Rod Zapata quickly stepped in, physically separating the faction members from Mysterio and instructing them not to touch him. Zapata then signaled the “X” gesture to the backstage area, the universal sign for a legitimate injury requiring medical attention.
As of this writing, WWE has not issued an official update on Mysterio’s condition.
Royal Rumble Implications
Mysterio is currently advertised to compete in the 30-Man Royal Rumble match this Saturday, January 31, in Riyadh. His potential removal from the card could impact the roster lineup for the event.
Backstage segments have highlighted Finn Bálor’s frustration regarding his exclusion from the Rumble match, with storylines emphasizing that there are “no more slots available.” If Mysterio is medically uncleared to compete, a spot would open up, potentially clearing a path for Bálor’s entry.
Given the fact that Seth Rollins did the worked injury a few months ago, anything’s possible but, as of now, it looks like the Rey injury is legit. Hopefully it’s nothing too serious.
History of Injuries
At 51 years old, Mysterio has sustained numerous significant injuries over his three-decade career:
- Knees: Mysterio has undergone multiple surgeries on his left knee, including procedures to repair a torn ACL and patella tendon in 2006, as well as subsequent surgeries in 2013 and November 2023.
- Biceps: He required three surgeries following a bicep injury in 2008 and suffered a torn bicep in 2018 prior to his full-time WWE return.
- Shoulder: In 2019, Mysterio was forced to relinquish the United States Championship after suffering a separated left shoulder at Money in the Bank.
- Triceps: He suffered a torn tricep during a match at Payback in 2020, which sidelined him for several weeks.
- Recent History: In April 2025, Mysterio was pulled from WrestleMania 41 due to a torn abductor muscle sustained on SmackDown.
Austin @_Theory1 drilled Rey Mysterio into the mat and took that curb stomp in a very awkward way. When Rod Zapata threw up the X to alert medical Rey was holding his shoulder so it’s likely Rey was injured from the stomp #WWERaw pic.twitter.com/i0GqbVygI1
