Rhea Ripley made an appearance on Flash Morgan Webster’s podcast where she shared some interesting news.
It turns out that the original plans didn’t call for her to beat Shayna Baszler to win the NXT Women’s Title last year. WWE had booked a match between the two. The original finish of that first match was supposed to be Baszler winning clean and no rematch taking place.
That all changed when she did a promo to set up the contest. WWE officials witnessed the pop that she received from the fans.
Ripley described it as being insanely loud inside of Full Sail University and that it didn’t come off as strong as it was inside of the venue on NXT television.
Once WWE officials realized how over she was after this moment and being told that she was over at live events, WWE decided to do a DQ finish where Ripley hit Baszler with a chair in order to set up a rematch and build towards the title change.
Fast forward to the December 18, 2019 episode of NXT, Ripley dethroned Baszler to win the championship. She held it until WrestleMania 36 where she dropped it to Charlotte Flair.
WWE just announced today that Flair will defend the NXT Women’s Title against Ripley and Io Shirai at the NXT TakeOver: In Your House special. To see the updated card, click here.
