Ric Flair Explains Why He Refused To Start A Wrestler’s Union

WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair recently joined the “Games With Names” podcast, hosted by Julian Edelman.

The conversation turned to his daughter, Charlotte Flair. When Edelman asked if he sees himself in her when she performs, Flair said, No, she’s so much better than I was. In the ring, she’s unreal.” Flair mentioned he got her a personal trainer when she was young: “That’s what I got for Ashley when she was about five. She hated it.” “Dad, I’m not gonna go work out for two hours every day.” “Yes, you are.”

Flair shared several anecdotes about his career, including his time driving Andre the Giant. “I drove Andre for a year when he was Jean Ferre,” Flair said. He confirmed Andre’s legendary drinking capacity. “I saw him do it,” Flair said, referencing a story of Andre drinking 106 beers.

He also recounted partying with NFL legend Lawrence Taylor before a New York Giants game. “He came to see me wrestle Sting at the Meadowlands… we all went back to his place,” Flair recalled. “And, you know, four o’clock in the morning he drives off in his Jaguar, and he’s, he’s lit, man… He got to the game the next day, 15 minutes before kickoff. You missed all the warm ups, everything, three sacks. I go, unreal.”

Flair shared another story about partying in Europe with Shawn Michaels after Michaels found religion. “(Shawn Michaels) said, Are you ever gonna grow up?” Flair said he eventually convinced Michaels to join him at the hotel bar in Paris. “We stayed up till three o’clock in the morning. Sean got murdered. The Hardy Boys had to take him to his room. He got up the next day. He said he would. He got on a plane and went home.”

On asking why there isn’t a union in wrestling, Flair said, “Nobody wants to do it because they’ll just move on without you. They wanted me and Hogan to do it. Hulk called me and I said, ‘I’m not jumping out there. They’ll just replace me.’ Jesse Ventura drove me crazy. ‘Come on, come on.’ I go, ‘Jesse, so I give up the NWA World Championship, walk out. They’ll just put the belt on DiBiase or back to Harley.’ It just wasn’t something I wanted to explore, but I was certainly asked to do it a lot.”
