Ric Flair’s WWE release was a Vince McMahon decision after a text message about Charlotte

It was reported on Monday that Ric Flair was no longer under contract with WWE after the WWE Hall of Famer asked to be let out of his deal and WWE granted his request. Flair reportedly grew frustrated with certain booking decisions on the show and voiced his opinion.

On Tuesday, WWE confirmed the news with this statement posted on their website:

On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that the WWE Hall of Famer voiced his opinion about the way WWE had been booking his daughter, Charlotte, on television and sent a text message to Vince McMahon.

Meltzer also noted that it was a McMahon decision to let Flair go, not Flair’s.

“He had sent a message, I think it was a text message, but he had sent a message to Vince McMahon, and it was basically complaining about Ashley’s….Charlotte’s booking, her situation, and now he’s gone. I’ve seen it said it was his decision to leave, and I just know from people who I know who are closer to this situation than I am that say that it was Vince’s decision.”

It’s unclear whether Flair has a non-compete deal.
