Roman Reigns’ heel turn has caught on with fans because the SmackDown numbers are up and the segments with Reigns are doing above-average numbers.
However, it wasn’t always in the cards for Reigns to have a long reign as champion.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that there were other plans but perhaps, plans changed because they haven’t done a good job at elevating other names to take the title from Reigns.
Meltzer said, “Roman Reigns with a long title run was not the idea, believe it or not. Even though it seems so obvious, it was not the idea. I don’t know who the guy who was supposed to be the champion was supposed to be because they basically devalued everybody else.”
Reigns will face Drew McIntyre this Sunday night at the Survivor Series in a non-title champion vs. champion match and it’s anyone’s guess as to who is next to challenge for the Universal Championship after Sunday night.
Big E hasn’t done much in recent weeks and it seems early for him to be in the title hunt. Lars Sullivan is getting airtime with weekly interview segments on SmackDown so perhaps, he will be next in line.
