There has been some buzz lately about the future of WWE’s UK brand going forward because they have begun to lock in some top names. Some fans have wondered if WWE was looking to replace the struggling 205 Live brand with the UK division. However, PWInsider’s Mike Johnson shot down those rumors and said that the plan is for the UK division to be its own separate brand.
Just to add to what Johnson said, here is what is going on with the UK brand. The idea is to get a TV deal in the United Kingdom. Obviously, the weekly UK show will be available on the WWE Network but there is more money on the table with a traditional television deal. If a deal is made then what would likely happen is that the show would be made available on the network but it would be geo-blocked and/or available on a delay in the UK because the TV network deal would have priority.
The 205 Live brand is not going away. In fact, there are still plans to run live events. Right now, the feeling is that they need to stay the course with the great wrestling matches every week and hopefully they will generate a buzz. People in the company know that it would be better to run separate 205 Live tapings in a location like Full Sail University but there are cost issues involved.
Perhaps they will be more open to separate tapings when they start getting their massive influx of cash from the Fox and NBCUniversal TV deals.
