While appearing on Insight With Chris Van Vliet, Rusev shared his long-term goals for life after professional wrestling, which include a return to his native country and a potential run for political office. The former champion revealed that he aspires to become the mayor of his hometown, Plovdiv, Bulgaria. To prepare for this future, Rusev plans to enroll in school to study public administration and learn the Bulgarian political system.
“I wanted to be mayor of my hometown, involved in Bulgaria. Yeah, I don’t mind [moving back home]. I don’t mind…I just missed signing up because I wanted to go back to school, but I missed the enrollment date. So next year, I’m definitely signing up. I’m going to school for public administration and Bulgaria school because I want to learn their system and go from there,” Rusev said.
The 40-year-old wrestler mentioned that he plans to evaluate his physical condition at age 45 before deciding how much longer to continue his in-ring career. Rusev noted that he feels better than he has in a long time due to a smarter training regimen and a better diet. He and Lana are also currently navigating the IVF process to start a family, which he called his “next chapter.”
Rusev described himself as being in a state of gratitude, specifically thanking God, his wife, and the wrestling fans for their support throughout his 21-year journey in the United States. He ended by saying he is excited for the future both in and out of the ring.
