The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has some backstage news on the decisions behind bringing in certain names for last week’s Greatest Royal Rumble show.
It was clear that the people who reached out to WWE were not keeping up with the current product because they asked for names like Yokozuna, Ultimate Warrior and The Undertaker to be brought in. That explains why Taker was booked for the show.
They also requested for WWE to bring in the announcers “with the crown and the black hat,” which explains why it was first announced that Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler would be doing commentary for the show. That changed late in the game and they were moved to the Kickoff show. Michael Cole, Corey Graves, and Byron Saxton did commentary during the main show.
It’s not confirmed, but the belief within WWE is that Sumi Hiroki, the sumo wrestler that had never wrestled in a pro wrestling match before last week, was brought in to appease the Saudi’s that wanted to see Yokozuna. Since Yokozuna passed away 18 years ago, the next best thing was to give them a big sumo guy.
WWE will be back in Saudi Arabia later this year for a show in Riyadh.
