Seth Rollins has reflected on his memorable trilogy of matches against Cody Rhodes in 2022, admitting that he felt Rhodes was the right choice to win their Hell in a Cell encounter despite suffering a torn pectoral muscle. The match is infamous for Rhodes’ gruesome injury, which he sustained prior to the event but chose to wrestle through.
Speaking on the Games with Names podcast, Rollins explained his mindset going into the match, acknowledging that Rhodes’ injury solidified the storytelling direction.
“When he hurt his pec, at least to me, it felt obvious that he should win that match. That’s the best story,” Rollins said. “Even though he was going to be gone for nine months. ‘Do we give Seth the win because Cody is going to be gone?’ That’s oftentimes how it works. It just made sense from a story perspective. I was a heel, it wasn’t going to hurt me to lose at that point.”
Rollins lost all three matches in their 2022 series, but he finally secured a victory over Rhodes at Crown Jewel in Perth later that year, capturing the Crown Jewel Championship. He admitted that getting a win back was something he hoped for to balance the narrative.
“In my head, I was hoping to get it back story-wise,” Rollins said. “I don’t know what the planned outcome of the match was before he hurt his pec. We hadn’t gotten that far. Usually, I just wait until the day of to understand what that’s going to be, and we take it from there.”
Rollins is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury but is aiming to return in time for WrestleMania 42.
