Seth Rollins Reveals The Mind Behind His SummerSlam Crutch Drop

Seth Rollins has credited Bobby Roode for the idea behind his iconic SummerSlam 2025 crutch drop, telling ESPN’s Highlights with Omar that the now-famous moment came from the WWE producer rather than from Rollins himself.

The crutch drop was the central moment of one of the most-talked-about WWE storylines of 2025. Rollins appeared to sustain a knee injury during his match against LA Knight at Saturday Night’s Main Event, which left WWE wrestlers and fans alike fooled.

The SummerSlam 2025 sequence unfolded after CM Punk defeated GUNTHER to win the World Heavyweight Championship. Rollins entered the arena on crutches, selling the knee injury. He then dropped the crutches and marched to the ring, revealing the injury as a ruse, before cashing in his Money in the Bank contract to win the title from Punk.

“None of this was rehearsed. Talked about it briefly. I can’t take all the credit for the crutch tossing. I’ll take all the credit when it’s my idea. The idea for the crutch drop was actually a Bobby Roode idea, who’s one of the incredible performers in our industry, or was, and now is a great producer backstage.”

“Honestly, this came off smoother than I expected. The crutch drop, even the jacket, the handoff for the briefcase was smooth.”

Roode, the former TNA and WWE wrestler, retired from in-ring competition in 2023 due to a neck injury and transitioned into a backstage producer role.
