The AEW trademark news got a lot of people’s attention in the wrestling business. Dave Meltzer talked about interest from current WWE Superstars. Of course, everything depends on if All Elite Wrestling gets off the ground with a big TV deal.
Meltzer said, “Everyone in the business today, it was something that people were talking about. I can tell you that in WWE, I know of people that are very very interested in this. I know of several names.”
He added that this doesn’t mean that they will do anything but they are very open to the idea. Everything depends on if there is something tangible (ie. a TV deal) and as of right now AEW is just an idea. Everything can change if a TV network decides to give them a shot with big money involved.
He added, “There’s a lot of guys in WWE that are scared to leave.” He continued, “If somebody’s got a WCW-like thing out there, there’s a lot of guys there that would leave, probably.”
Again, as written about here in the past, there have been many people with a lot of money that have tried to get into the wrestling business and things didn’t work out because they couldn’t get a TV deal. Jeff Jarrett has been trying to get a deal for years for Global Force Wrestling. Toby Keith would have been involved if a TV network would have gotten involved. Billy Corgan has also been looking for a TV deal but he’s been unable to do so.
Meltzer noted that we’re a long way from anything happening. The game will change only if they are able to get a TV deal.
You can bet that if AEW gets close to getting a TV deal, WWE is going to be offering contracts to keep wrestlers from going there. The last thing they want is a wrestling promotion to grow to be as big as WCW in the mid-1990s.
