Back in October of last year, AJ Styles teased a match with WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels at the Royal Rumble PPV, which got everyone talking about a possible match between the two stars. However, it didn’t happen. No doubt it would have been a match that everyone would have loved to seen. Ironically, WWE almost planned it for WrestleMania 33.
After the decision was made for John Cena to beat Styles at the Royal Rumble for the WWE Championship, WWE didn’t have plans for Styles at WrestleMania 33 and they needed to find him an opponent, which led to the idea of having Styles wrestle Michaels at WrestleMania.
Michaels recently appeared on Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast and revealed that WWE did approach him about doing a match with Styles at the event. He stated that he is guessing that he is breaking something here and doesn’t know if he should. “I could have had that match,” Michaels said. “They didn’t have an opponent for AJ at WrestleMania. I said that I hadn’t been asked because I hadn’t—but then I was.” He added that he wishes Styles was in WWE ten years ago and thinks that Styles is very talented.
WWE decided to have Styles wrestle Shane McMahon at the event. You can hear Michaels talking about turning down the match around the 41:40 mark in the player below.
