Gary Vaynerchuk featured Stephanie McMahon on his latest podcast to talk about the business side of things in pro wrestling.
Here are some highlights:
Stephanie McMahon talked about the start of the women’s revolution: “On NXT, which started out as our developmental brand and evolved into our third global brand, the women started stealing the show. There were chants of “this is wrestling” and “women’s wrestling”. Then on RAW and SmackDown, this is February of 2015, we had a women’s tag match that lasted all of 30 seconds in a 3-hour show, which unfortunately was the norm, our audience started a hashtag called give divas a chance that trended worldwide for 3 days that demanded more screen time, better athleticism, better storylines, and better character development for our women. Our chairman and CEO, my father, responded at the highest level we hear you, keep watching, hashtag give divas a chance”
Stephanie talked about Vince and the expansion of WWE: “My dad grew up in a trailer park and he truly lived the American dream and took what was a regional northeast territory and turned it into this global phenomenon that is in 108 countries and 28 languages. The WWE Network was one of the first to launch an OTT service behind Netflix and Hulu.”
Stephanie was asked if Vince listens to people that give him advice: “Vince listens to the fans. He listens to the live audience. He listens to social media. He also listens to our employees. He always said you never know where a great idea is going to come from. He solicits that opinion. He talks to people.”
Stephanie was asked: “Do you feel like your husband and your father are good at admitting when they are wrong?” “For me personally, I am very transparent and I own my mistakes. I feel that is very important. I think there is a difference between being wrong and making mistakes, I know that’s a subtlety in semantics but human psychology plays into that. Going back to Vince, he believes in some cost. So if you made a mistake, if something isn’t’ working, stop throwing good money after bad, just move on. Learn the lesson that you are supposed to learn and then apply it. You can make mistakes, but don’t make the same mistake twice.”
