AJ Styles Details His New Backstage Role With WWE

Following his official in-ring retirement, AJ Styles has transitioned into a backstage role with WWE focused on talent scouting and developmental mentorship. On the premiere episode of The Phenomenally Retro Podcast, the Grand Slam Champion explained that his new responsibilities will span the independent scene, NXT, and the WWE main roster. Styles noted that he is currently “on the internet” checking out talent to see if he can help them improve or facilitate their entry into the company through initiatives like the WWE ID program.

“It’s not just with indie talent,” Styles revealed. “It’ll be NXT talent and maybe some main roster talent as well.” He described himself as a resource for established stars as well, stating he will be traveling to the upcoming Monday Night Raw in Seattle to talk with talent. “Sometimes you need to talk to somebody to see how they’re feeling, and maybe they want to go down the PC [Performance Center], and they want to work on some stuff,” Styles explained. “I’m that guy. That’s what I’m there for.”

Scouting, Morale, and the WWE ID Pipeline

A component of Styles’ role involves serving as a bridge for independent wrestlers looking to join the WWE ecosystem. By identifying standouts on the indie circuit, Styles hopes to facilitate the “WWE ID” process, a developmental initiative first introduced in October 2024 to bring independent wrestlers under contract while allowing them to continue performing on the indie circuit. This role places Styles in a unique position to influence the future of professional wrestling for years to come.

Beyond scouting, Styles is prioritizing locker room morale. “So the morale, if I can help make sure it’s still there in a good way. I want to be that guy,” he stated. While he admits the new job is “a little slow” at the moment, he anticipates the role will evolve as more phone calls are made and specific needs arise within the company’s various brands. This transition ensures that Styles’ vast experience remains a cornerstone of WWE’s infrastructure following his 2026 Hall of Fame induction.

Building a Second-Generation Legacy

During the podcast, Styles also confirmed a personal project that aligns with his new professional focus: he is currently training his son to become a professional wrestler. This news suggests that a second-generation wrestler with the Styles name will likely join the WWE Performance Center and NXT in the near future.
