AJ Styles is the latest wrestling voice to weigh in on Sami Zayn’s WWE Championship reign, and he’s hoping the company has big plans for the new titleholder.
Speaking on his P1 Podcast, Styles addressed the growing debate over whether Zayn is simply a placeholder champion, and made it clear he’d be disappointed to see the reign treated that way.
“I hate to think that this was something that is gonna be a flip-flop. We don’t necessarily do that. It’s not good for business,” Styles said. “But what’s the next step? I’m not really sure, which makes it very interesting.”
Styles expressed full confidence in Zayn’s ability to carry the championship, praising his skill set as an underdog star. “I don’t want to see a transitional champion. I think that Sami’s more than capable of pulling off being a World Champion and totally being the underdog here,” Styles said.
Styles acknowledged the fan concern surrounding the reign, but he pushed back on the idea that Zayn is destined to be a short-term champion.
“You got people worried that Sami’s just going to be a transitional champion. He’s gonna win just to lose it to who knows?” Styles said. “I don’t think that is the best way to go about doing the storyline. I think there’s some magic to be made.”
Zayn defends the WWE Title against Cody Rhodes on tonight’s Raw.
