Swerve Strickland: ‘At 21 Years Old,’ Je’Von Evans ‘Is Better Than I Was At 30’

Speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Swerve Strickland offered high praise for young wrestler Je’Von Evans, stating that Evans is already more skilled at 21 than Strickland was when he was 30 years old. Strickland, who is currently one of AEW’s biggest stars, noted that this observation is a sign of wrestling’s natural evolution. Strickland commented on the comparison between himself and the younger talent. “It’s not an insult to say Je’Von Evans is better than Swerve. I’m like, ‘Yes, he is. At 21 years old, he is better than I was at 30’,” Strickland stated.

Evolution Of Talent

However, Strickland pointed out that he has an advantage with non-physical skills developed over time. He explained that he possesses more intangibles because he learned those skills working on the independent circuit, whereas Evans is learning in a system at a young age.

Strickland believes Evans’ superior starting point is entirely logical because of who Evans grew up watching. He noted that Evans has watched wrestlers like himself and Lio Rush, and has taken those lessons to “the next level”. Strickland compared this to the trajectory of another prominent talent. “Ricochet watched the same guys. He watched Rey Mysterio and took it to the next level, because that’s what evolution is supposed to be,” he said.

Searching For Intangibles

While he respects Evans’ current technical ability, Strickland is now waiting to see what unique traits Evans develops. “I have all these other intangibles that just make me, me. I can’t wait to find the intangible that he finds that makes Je’Von, Je’Von. I can’t wait for him to find those things,” Strickland noted.
