Teddy Long: It Was Too Soon To Take The WWE World Title Off Jey Uso

WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long has voiced his thoughts regarding the booking of “Main Event” Jey Uso, stating on his “Road Trip After Hours” podcast that it was “too soon” for Jey to lose the World Heavyweight Championship. Long believes a longer reign would have ultimately made the eventual title loss more meaningful.

Host Mac Davis brought up recent comments from Rikishi, who felt WWE was not booking his son against “top notch players” to properly establish his first world title reign. Long concurred with the sentiment that the run was cut short. “To me, and this is my opinion, you know, I thought it was too soon,” Long said. “I thought he’d get a little bit of a run with it, you know what I mean? So sometimes, you know, when you keep it for a minute, then, then when you do take it, it means something.”

Long then shared a piece of wrestling philosophy that he feels applies to this situation. “Always remember this. It’s not how you win the title, it’s how you lose it,” he stated, implying that the impact of Jey’s eventual loss was diminished by the brevity of his reign.

Mac Davis added his own critique, suggesting WWE Creative failed Jey after his championship win at WrestleMania 41. “They had the story all the way to the championship. I just don’t think they thought past that,” Davis said. “And because of that, Jay suffers holding that championship, he’s not given some of the opportunities or real creative storylines to make people care, and no matter how good he is, if the storyline stinks, the storyline stinks.” WWE had their reasons for taking the title off Jey so soon.
