Former WWE star The Godfather appeared on the Midnight Hustle podcast this week to talk about life after wrestling. He also talked about getting the call for his WWE Hall Of Fame induction, partying during the Attitude Era, how he got weed in every town during his days in WWE, how Vince McMahon feels about marijuana, how the Papa Shango gimmick was born, drinking with Curt Hennig, being an outlaw biker, working at strip clubs, country music, backstage fights, fighting The Undertaker at the hotel and more.
Here are some highlights:
On if he was shocked to get the call to be inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame:
"Yea, I thought because of the pimp thing that it would hold me up but I mean if you look at the body of work, people today still talk about me and the Warrior. I was part of building The Rock up to be what he is in the Nation of Domination...I was going to the gym and Mark Carrano, who is not there anymore. Mark Carrano called me and he's like 'hey Bear you ready for WrestleMania?' I'm like 'yeah man I'm ready.' He goes 'well who you bringing? You bringing your wife, your kids, what?' What the f**k does it matter what I'm bringing? He goes ' well, we want to know.' I go 'why do you want to know?' He goes 'because Vince is putting you in the Hall Of Fame this year.' ... I go, 'cool I never thought a pimp would get in there.'"
He feels that Sid and Hogan's departure after WrestleMania 8 hindered the Papa Shango character. He also talked about why he was late for his run-in at the end of the Sid-Hogan match:
"Oh yea, I got thrown into the wolves especially with Sid. Sid was supposed to a job for Warrior and he quit, this and that. They had nobody else with heat on them so I kind of got thrown to the dogs but that's business and I'm a businessman. It is what it is. On the thing on being late, they just sent me late. I never even knew I was late. I just knew that they just sent me and I was supposed to go. Like I said, I was going through a bad divorce at that time so Hogan, Warrior, Sid, none of that sh** meant anything to me. Nothing. I didn't care about Hogan. Hogan wasn't no friend of mine, he still isn't. Hogan is Hogan. He's not the good guy people think he is, I'll let it go at that."
On the best backstage fight he's seen:
I didn't see a lot of fights bro. I've seen D'Lo Brown hook Ahmed Johnson where he had him hooked where me and Ron Simmons were telling D'Lo 'let him up, let him up' but there wasn't a lot of fighting in the back, not when I was there. I can't think of one fight besides breaking up that D'Lo Brown fight."
He also talked about how WCW saved money by hiring Virgil over him, how marijuana saved his life after being hooked on pills in the early 90s, BSK and DX co-existing in the locker room, Yokozuna rapping and playing basketball, and more.
