In a story that seemingly came out of nowhere, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has purchased the bankrupt XFL.
Johnson teamed up with RedBird Capital to buy the league just hours after an auction was set to begin, according to a press release issued today.
Johnson and his partner paid $15 million for the league, just months after Vince McMahon folded after he cited COVID-19 for not being able to continue. Johnson’s business partner, Dany Garcia, will be a stakeholder.
The XFL reboot in 2020 drew 3 million viewers in its first week and solid attendance numbers.
After McMahon decided to pull out of the league, TV networks such as ESPN and FOX were still interested in airing games but there were conditions that needed to be met since McMahon was no longer on board.
Having Johnson as co-owner of the league will make it easier for the league to open more doors.
