Matt Riddle got fans talking with his comments about WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns.
It happened when the Raw Tag Team Champion was talking in an interview about Reigns taking credit for the success of this year’s SummerSlam. Riddle made it clear that he doesn’t think Reigns moves the needle and the reason Reigns is in a top spot is due to him being related to The Rock. The former MMA fighter also thinks he could beat up Reigns in a real fight.
Dave Meltzer noted earlier this week on Wrestling Observer Radio that Riddle ruffled some feathers with some people in WWE for saying what he did.
Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that “there was a lot of heat in certain circles on Riddle for comments on Bleacher Report on Reigns.”
Meltzer pointed out how this is not storyline-related as they’re on different brands and a match can’t be booked right now if it was part of a storyline. However, WWE does hold its next Draft next month so it’s possible they can go back to this if they wanted to book a feud in the future.
Meltzer added that “it was very much considered a negative by many with the basic theme that Riddle is incredibly talented, more so than he gets credit for, but he’s not very astute politically in the WWE jungle.”
Riddle has been critical of Brock Lesnar and Goldberg in the past so the WWE star speaking his mind about top WWE stars is nothing new.
