Unfortunately, NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa is currently dealing with a neck injury will require surgery.
Dave Meltzer reported on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio that Ciampa will undergo the knife in a few days. It was added that although there is not a timeline for his return, he’s not going to be in the ring for a “long, long time.”
Based on previous neck surgeries, Meltzer speculated that Ciampa could be out anywhere from 6 to 14 months.
Ciampa was expected to make his next title defense against former DIY tag team partner Johnny Gargano at the NXT TakeOver: New York event takes place on Friday, April 5, 2019 in Brooklyn, New York at the Barclays Center that will air on the WWE Network. This will be part of WrestleMania 35 weekend.
Obviously, with him undergoing surgery, WWE will have to make changes to this storyline and match. This injury also caused WWE to re-write an episode of Raw two weeks ago as Ciampa and Gargano were set to be involved in a Fatal 4-Way Tag Team Match.
Now, Ciampa will have to vacate the NXT Title. The belief is that WWE will make the announcement at next Wednesday’s NXT TV tapings in Winter Park, Florida at Full Sail University.
