Top WWE Star Hints Retirement Is ‘Sooner Rather Than Later’

Despite returning to WWE less than a year ago after a near-decade absence, CM Punk acknowledged that his time as an active in-ring competitor may be drawing to a close. Since making a full-time return following an injury sustained at the 2024 Royal Rumble, Punk has been a top star in WWE’s main event scene, even briefly holding the World Heavyweight Championship after SummerSlam before Seth Rollins cashed in.

Speaking with WWE’s digital team during a recent tour of Japan, Punk discussed his career longevity amid other retirements shaking up the wrestling. “So I’m standing here now, near the end of my career,” Punk stated. “John Cena’s calling it quits, AJ Styles says he’s going to retire next year, and I don’t know how much time I’ve got left. I’m going to keep going until the wheels fall off”.

Punk noted in the vlog that he is focusing on appreciating the present moments and recognizing the contributions of departing stars. He framed the wave of retirements not just as an end, but as a healthy sign for the industry’s future.

“I know that’s sooner rather than later,” Punk admitted regarding his own retirement. “That’s why I think it’s important, for all of us, not just me, to celebrate every wrestler as they retire. There’s a whole new generation of talent coming in to take our place, and in a way, we’re excited to see that happen”.

Punk’s journey back to WWE included a controversial departure in 2014, followed by a return to wrestling with AEW in 2021. His AEW tenure faced challenges, including injuries and the backstage incident following All Out 2022, eventually leading to his exit. He made a surprise return to WWE at Survivor Series 2023 but was injured again at the 2024 Royal Rumble, causing him to miss WrestleMania XL. His 2025 has been more successful, featuring a WrestleMania main event and teaming with his wife, AJ Lee. Currently, the 46-year-old is scheduled to challenge Jey Uso for the vacant World Heavyweight Championship at Saturday Night’s Main Event next week.
