NXT standout Trick Williams, the current TNA World Heavyweight Champion, boldly asserted his unique position in the wrestling world, declaring “I am the line” between NXT and TNA. Speaking on “Busted Open” with Dave LaGreca, Tommy Dreamer, and Bishop Dyer (Baron Corbin) after his successful title defense against Mike Santana on NXT, Williams used a striking classical analogy to describe his reign.
When asked by LaGreca what it’s like to hold another company’s World Championship, Williams responded, “Have you seen the movie Troy? Remember when Achilles took out the top guy and he held his head and brought it back to his own people. That’s how I feel holding that title, like I took out your king, your best guy. I’m holding the head just so everybody knows that I’m the top guy now.”
This strong statement underscores Williams’ confident, heelish persona as he navigates being an NXT talent holding TNA’s most prestigious championship. He dismissed attempts to define his responsibilities to either brand, stating, “Everybody keeps trying to figure out the line between NXT and TNA. TNA and NXT, don’t cross Trick Williams, I’m the line. That’s all you need to know.”
Williams also acknowledged the shift in fan perception as he achieves more success. “It’s funny, because the people is totally with you on the on the rise when you’re trying to climb and scratch your claw your way to the top. And then as soon as you get this gold one time, they have it for you second time. Okay, now, when you become a three time world champion, I am no longer relatable to the average Joes around the world,” he explained. “And that’s why, hey, they ain’t feeling Trick Williams, that’s okay… y’all just want the newest, hottest thing on the block.”
Despite any changing fan sentiments, Williams made it clear his motivation is self-driven: “I’m doing this for me, man… I love the love. I appreciate it. You rocking with Trick Williams, you not, don’t matter, but you’re gonna be making noise.” He even playfully suggested the TNA title itself should be rebranded, asking Tommy Dreamer, “I was wondering if we could change this title a little bit and ask you to put that Trick right here… until somebody is bold enough to take this title from me, they’ll be the one to snatch the Trick off. But if they can’t, it’ll be Tricking A for a long time.” Dave LaGreca jokingly agreed to call the promotion “Tricking A” while Williams is champion.
