WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque has pulled back the curtain on the creation of the upcoming Wrestlepalooza premium live event, revealing in a new interview that the entire show “came together very quickly.”
Speaking on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Levesque was asked about the process behind the newly announced September 20 event, which will be the first WWE PLE to air on the new ESPN streaming platform. WWE honored their number of events for the year with Peacock and started the ESPN deal earlier than originally expected.
“There was a lot of thought, but it was in a brief period of time. We were sort of under the gun,” Levesque said. “As soon as we heard Indy was on the table and they had a date open, we were in. That was a no-brainer for us. We moved quickly on this whole thing. The whole thing came together very quickly.”
He went on to state that the request for a “mega-event” in September came directly from their new broadcast partner. “ESPN asked for the date, they wanted a mega-event, we said yes. We just had to pick a name and go,” he explained. Not only is it the first show on the new ESPN platform, but it will also air on the same date as AEW’s All Out pay-per-view, a direct move of counter-programming. AEW has opted to move its show to earlier in the day.
The show is expected to feature a first-time-ever singles match between John Cena and Brock Lesnar, a mixed tag team match pitting CM Punk and the returning AJ Lee against Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch, a match to crown a new Women’s World Champion, and the in-ring reunion of The Usos.
He also talked about AJ Lee’s return and a spoiler for WrestlePalooza. The full interview with Paul “Triple H” Levesque can be seen on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
