Tyrus does not believe CM Punk should be the one to win the vacant World Heavyweight Championship at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Speaking on TMZ’s Inside The Ring, Tyrus was asked about the upcoming title match between Jey Uso and CM Punk. When the host suggested Jey Uso doesn’t need the title to be over, Tyrus disagreed.
“I disagree. Yeah, just like Steamboat. And I look at him….I would always, usually say Kofi was our generation’s Ricky Steamboat, but then he turned heel… I think with Uso, he should have that title, and the more you hate it, the better it is for business.”
Regarding CM Punk winning the championship, Tyrus stated that Punk’s role should now be to elevate younger talent.
“I think punk is at a point in his career where titles really shouldn’t be on the radar. Really. He should be getting the Breakker ready. He should be getting the young guys ready. I think there’s a point, nothing against Phil. I love Phil. So he gave me a match, a title match, on Monday Night Raw when at the time when none of the other top guys would so I’m always thankful he’s always a good dude. But I also think there comes a point when it’s the other guy’s time, and who better to get somebody over then look what Jericho was doing in AEW. How many guys did he make over there? So I think there comes a point where it’s not about the titles” .
Tyrus elaborated that legends should be building new legends, which is done by putting the younger talent over.
“I just think, like, there comes a point where the legends need to help build new legends, and the only way you do that is by having great feuds and putting the young guys over. You have to, because you want to build it for the next generation… Punk doesn’t need a title. No, not at all…..But he needs someone to to get through him, to get to the title. And I think Triple H sees that. I think he knows that, you know” .
