As we first noted on Friday, Matt Hardy’s contract is set to expire soon and it’s sometime before WrestleMania. Jeff Hardy’s contract is also due to expire in a few months but WWE may reserve the right to add time to his deal because of the time he’s been off due to injuries.
PWInsider is reporting that Matt’s deal will expire in February and there have been discussions about a new deal but the biggest sticking point for Matt is how he will be used going forward. Last Monday on Raw, he was brought in to lose to Buddy Murphy in a match where Matt came across as an afterthought.
Matt and WWE are reportedly not far apart on the financial side of the talks but he realizes that this could be his last contract he signs and he wants to make sure he is used in a certain way. I would presume losing squash matches on Raw is not what he wants to be doing as he contemplates his next, and possibly final, wrestling contract.
That would explain his recent “Free The Delete” videos that he has been posting on YouTube in recent weeks. It’s no secret that the “Woken” character in WWE did not take off the same way as his “Broken” character did in Impact Wrestling and it appears that the “Broken” version is something he wants to do again. Based on how non-WWE creations have been treated in the past, the chances of seeing a push for “Broken” Matt Hardy, a character he created while in Impact Wrestling, seems slim.
The “Free The Delete” videos are being done so that he can prepare for what’s next. If not in WWE, then he could be “Broken” on the independent scene and possibly All Elite Wrestling. As previously noted, Matt has friends in AEW and I’m sure they would be very open to talking with him.
On Friday, Matt teased that he expects things to turn around in a couple of months. That is the biggest hint he has given publicly that he has been considering his post-WWE options. Click here to read what Matt said on Friday.
