Over the weekend, it was reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Sami Zayn’s contract was set to expire later this year. This led to speculation that he may leave WWE and join Kevin Owens in AEW. Owens’ WWE contract is set to expire on January 31, 2022, but it’s not 100 percent certain that he is leaving.
Author/historian Pat Laprade is reporting that Zayn’s contract actually expires in the Spring of 2022, a few months later than originally reported.
Zayn had previously told Laprade in an interview that he signed a three-year deal around the time of his first shoulder surgery in June 2018. That means that his deal would have already expired but, as Laprade explained, there was time added to his contract to make up for the time he was out of the ring. Therefore, Zayn’s deal would expire sometime in March or the beginning of April.
Laprade also pointed out that Zayn missed six months at the start of the pandemic but that time is not being added to his contract because WWE allowed wrestlers to stay home without being penalized.
All of this means that Zayn could become a free agent just a couple of months after his best friend Kevin Owens. If Owens signs with AEW then he could appear at AEW Revolution in February. Zayn could appear at Double Or Nothing in May in Las Vegas.
