As WWE NXT begins to move away from using older talent and focusing more on creating new stars, there have been questions on where Samoa Joe fits in.
Joe was released by WWE on April 15, 2021 but then brought back in June after Triple H was said to be unhappy about his release. Joe was initially brought back in an enforcer role but he quickly transitioned back to being an in-ring talent and he was booked to win the NXT Championship at TakeOver 36 from Karrion Kross. Joe relinquished the title in September due to an undisclosed injury and he hasn't been seen on television since that time.
In September, Bryan Alvarez reported that people in the company believed Joe's injury to be a work. Dave Meltzer added that the word from within WWE is that Joe was hired primarily for a non-wrestling role.
As seen in the photo below, Joe was at the recent NXT tryouts at the Performance Center so it looks like he will be working alongside the other trainers. Joe has never announced his retirement and he has expressed interest in wrestling again so the door is not shut for him as an active wrestler.
