Following the announcement from WWE that John Cena would be a “free agent,” fans online began to speculate that he could be Roman Reigns’ opponent for SummerSlam. That match-up would make sense for a future WrestleMania but I could also see them wanting to do it at SummerSlam since the company has been putting more effort into making SummerSlam stand out from their typical monthly pay-per-views. WWE is pushing that Reigns will make a big SummerSlam announcement next week but fans hoping to see him take on Cena will have to wait.
On Tuesday morning’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said that he asked about the Cena/Reigns rumors and was told that Cena will not be Reigns opponent. So, if the case, then there aren’t many options for a big-time SummerSlam match involving Reigns unless the company decides to bring someone back or if the idea is to do a Raw vs. Smackdown match. You can cross off Brock Lesnar and Braun Strowman as potential opponents because Strowman and Lesnar are scheduled to clash at SummerSlam. So, who’s next for Reigns? Perhaps, Bill Goldberg? I am just speculating but Goldberg vs. Reigns could be a possibility. Goldberg is training and he’s in great shape (click here to see a recent photo) and has expressed interest in wrestling again.
Cena will return on the 7/4 edition of Smackdown Live. The “free agent” storyline will allow Cena to appear on both Raw and Smackdown Live. The idea is that getting Cena on Raw will help boost the show’s declining ratings. Cena, even as a part-timer, is still WWE’s biggest draw and the top merchandise seller.
