Update on wrestlers who want to be released by WWE

WWE releases could be on the way but it sounds like it will take some time to convince Vince McMahon to let go of some unhappy wrestlers.

Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez talked about the release requests on Wrestling Observer Radio. Meltzer said, "there's different schools of thought. There's the school of thought that all these guys that wanna leave that are there that aren't happy, and they're really not, that it just kind of hurts morale and it's just better to let them go."

He continued, "But they're not letting anyone go. I know people who've argued to let people go. But they're not letting anyone go still."

In the recent Observer Newsletter, Meltzer did note that there could be releases coming but it would be for wrestlers who WWE doesn't think will be signed by AEW or wrestlers who they don't think will provide much of a boost for AEW.

Tye Dillinger (Shawn Spears), Goldust (Dustin Rhodes), and Hideo Itami (KENTA) were all granted releases but that was before AEW ran their first pay-per-view and the game has changed and people in WWE realize that AEW is legitimate competition. In the case of Dustin Rhodes, Vince McMahon had to be convinced by Triple H to let him go. It worked out well for AEW since they were able to book the brother vs. brother match between Dustin and Cody at the Double Or Nothing pay-per-view.

Mike Kanellis, Oney Lorcan, Sin Cara, and Luke Harper are still waiting on their release requests to be granted. Kanellis has several years left on his contract. I don't know what the contract status is for Lorcan but Harper should be free and clear in a few months when his contract expires. Sin Cara signed a three-year deal this year so his contract will run until the spring of 2022. The Revival could be the next to leave if they choose not to sign a new deal. Their contracts are due to expire in a few months. Another name to look for (but seems unlikely to leave) is Rey Mysterio. He has an opt-out clause in his contract. As noted earlier, there is one WWE Raw star considering options when her contract expires in March. Click here for more on that story.
