If you are wondering why there was such a weird finish for the Raw Women’s Championship match between Asuka and Sasha Banks at WWE Extreme Rules, it’s because that was not the original finish of the match and the original plan was changed a few hours before the show.
Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez talked about the change of plans today on Wrestling Observer Radio.
Meltzer said, “Asuka was supposed to win the match and Vince changed his mind, I think it was the day of the show. It was basically a last-minute change.”
Alvarez added, “They moved the Jeff Hardy-Sheamus match to television.” He added, “They are moving big matches to television because the television numbers are doing terribly.”
Meltzer said that people in the company flipped out when they saw the record-low rating for last week’s episode of Raw. It looks like WWE will announce tonight that Asuka is still the champion and they will do the rematch with Sasha Banks tonight or in the near future on Raw so they can get a bump in the ratings.
For months, the plan has been to do Banks vs. Bayley at SummerSlam but the plan was for the match to happen in Boston. It’s unclear yet if that match is still scheduled for SummerSlam or if they are postponing it for a later time.
