In a follow-up to the previous story, ESPN is reporting that the XFL has no plans to return in 2021. This basically confirms that the league is done.
As reported earlier, the league laid off nearly all of its staff and players on Friday morning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
McMahon had earmarked $300 million for the next three years and the hope was that they could eventually get a lucrative TV deal after that time. The TV networks had nothing to risk since the league was handling all costs for the next three years. Now with so much uncertainty with the economy, there are questions on what networks will be willing to offer to sports leagues.
Despite the decline in TV ratings, they were still higher than what the AAF was drawing and higher than most sports programming that airs in the spring season. Another thing the league had going was the positive press and feedback from fans and the play seemed to be better than the first incarnation of the league in 2001.
