As noted earlier, the Saudi Arabia General Sports Authority issued an apology because “indecent scenes” were shown during the show. BBC.com is reporting that state television cut off their broadcast of the show when promotional footage, featuring some of the female roster, aired.
However, the footage still aired on the big screen in the stadium and a short clip has surfaced online showing the reaction from fans when they saw Carmella on the big screen and it sounds like there was a mixed reaction with some people cheering and clapping and others booing. Check it out below:
There was also a mixed reaction to the segment featuring Shawn and Ariya Daivari walking down to the ring with an Iranian flag. The young Saudi Arabia recruits easily beat down the “heels” in the heated segment but some Saudi’s were not happy with it while others took it for what it was – two wrestlers getting heel heat and then getting beat by the babyfaces.
The BBC article noted that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been pushing reform and women are now allowed to drive and join the military. Saudi women are now allowed into sports stadiums, there is a Saudi ‘nightwear’ ban in sports stadiums, and Saudi women are now making history in soccer.
WWE’s stance on the issue is that progress is being made and hopefully, one day, women will be able to compete on a show in that part of the world.
