John Oliver of “Last Week Tonight” on HBO blasted WWE over their deal with Saudi Arabia. WWE is set to host their Crown Jewel event on the WWE Network next month (Fri. November 2, 2018). There has been a ton of controversy around the event, however.
Following the recent kidnapping and murder of a Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, the Crown Prince, and the Saudi Government are under heavy criticism. In fact, several news outlets have pulled out from covering an upcoming high-profile business conference in the country.
One company not pulling from Saudi Arabia in the midst of this entire ordeal is WWE. They plan to continue on with their “Crown Jewel” pay-per-view in November. Oliver went on a tangent about WWE recently for their refusal to pull their show from the country. Here’s what he had to say:
“They held their first of many events there back in April”, Oliver said. “And audiences around the world were treated to wall-to-wall propaganda about the new Saudi Arabia, including a video showing women happily driving, men dancing, and tourist destination beauty shots, as well as constant excited announcements throughout the broadcast.
“It seems that WWE is as overtly pro-Saudi Arabia as it is lately homoerotic, which is to say intensely.”
