Disney has released a new trailer for its live-action adaptation of Moana, which features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui and is scheduled to hit theaters on July 10, 2026.
Johnson previously voiced Maui in both the original animated Moana and its sequel Moana 2, and is now playing the character in physical form for the live-action reimagining. The film stars Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana and is directed by Emmy and Tony Award winner Thomas Kail, best known for Hamilton. Johnson serves as a producer alongside Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda under his Seven Bucks Productions banner.
The film follows Moana as she answers the ocean’s call and, alongside Maui, voyages beyond the reef of her island, Motunui, to restore prosperity to her people. It features original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina, with an original score composed by Mancina. Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated films, serves as an executive producer on the live-action version.
The Moana announcement comes during a busy period for Johnson both on and off screen. His performance in The Smashing Machine last year earned him a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of MMA legend Mark Kerr and generated significant Oscar buzz, though he was ultimately not nominated. He is also attached to upcoming projects from directors Martin Scorsese and Benny Safdie, and is set to star in the third and final installment of the rebooted Jumanji franchise.
On the wrestling front, Johnson is not expected to play a role at WrestleMania 42 this year, though he has teased a potential appearance at WrestleMania 43 in Saudi Arabia in 2027. WrestleMania 42 takes place April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
