A few months ago, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that WWE’s original idea was to have The Rock team with Ronda Rousey to face Triple H and Stephanie McMahon at WrestleMania. They couldn’t work out a deal with The Rock so that is when Triple H called Batista to see if he was interested. WWE ended up going with Kurt Angle.
The Rock confirmed the early rumors during an interview while promoting his new “Rampage” movie.
He said, “As a matter of fact, Vince McMahon and I were talking probably about two months ago trying to figure out what I was going to do if I went back to WrestleMania. He pitched me this really great idea that involved in a tag match with, of course, Ronda Rousey who is incredible – I’m very proud of her and Triple H and Stephanie. We were really excited about it but we couldn’t make it work this time because I was in Shanghai. But, Who knows down the line?”
Rock said that he is still open to doing a match with WWE in the future. It’s interesting that he did not bring up the movie insurance issues. In recent years, the big issue with Rock doing WrestleMania was that it would cause a conflict with the movie studios that he works with. The movie studios are wary of him getting back into the ring because of the injury risks. This time, he said that he couldn’t do the match because he was out of the country so, perhaps, the insurance issues are a problem of the past. Maybe we’ll see him at WrestleMania 35?
