Women’s World Championship Match Set For WWE Wrestlepalooza

The match to crown a new WWE Women’s World Champion has been made official. On the September 1st episode of Monday Night Raw, it was announced that Stephanie Vaquer will face IYO SKY for the vacant title at the upcoming Wrestlepalooza premium live event on Saturday, September 20. The two are scheduled to have a contract signing for the match on next week’s episode of Raw.

The championship was recently vacated by the former champion, Naomi, on the August 18th episode of Raw after she announced her pregnancy. This left the top of the Raw women’s division in a state of flux and created an opportunity for a new champion to be crowned.

The two competitors in the upcoming title match have both had a legitimate claim to a championship opportunity. Stephanie Vaquer earned her shot by winning a 20-woman battle royal at the all-women’s Evolution premium live event in July. She was originally scheduled to face Naomi for the title at the Clash in Paris premium live event, but that match was canceled due to Naomi’s announcement.

IYO SKY was also owed a championship match against Naomi. Her originally scheduled title bout on the August 11 episode of Raw was also canceled after it was announced that Naomi was not medically cleared to compete. With both women having a legitimate claim to a title opportunity, Raw General Manager Adam Pearce made the decision to have them face off to determine the new, undisputed champion.

The match between the two top stars is set to be one of the featured bouts at the inaugural Wrestlepalooza event, which will be the first WWE premium live event to air on the new ESPN streaming platform. The show will also feature John Cena in action as he is rumored to face Brock Lesnar.
