WWE Backlash 2016 PPV results: Ambrose vs. Styles, Kane vs. Wyatt

Renee Young, Lita, Booker T and Jerry Lawler welcomed us to the Backlash Pre-Show. A video package aired to hype the Intercontinental Title match between Dolph Ziggler and The Miz. Daniel Bryan is talking with Apollo Crews backstage and gave him some advice. Bryan told him to be more calm. Crews thanked him. Baron Corbin walked up and said that it sounds like a waste of time to him (Bryan giving Crews some advice). Corbin is upset that he is not on tonight’s Backlash PPV. Corbin thinks he is the future of SmackDown Live. Crews threatened to kick his ass. Bryan booked Crews vs. Corbin for the pre-show.

WWE aired a video package for the Randy Orton – Bray Wyatt match. As we reported earlier on the site, this match is off the card. Rhyno and Heath Slater took fan questions to hype their match on the show. Slater and Rhyno vowed to become the SmackDown Tag Team Champions. Alexa Bliss joined the panel to hype the six pack challenge Women’s Title match. Bliss vowed to become the first SmackDown Women’s Champion.

Singles Match: Baron Corbin vs. Apollo Crews.

They lock up, and Crews caught him with a dropkick. Corbin pushed him away and then sent him to the apron. Crews with a big right hand then went for a springboard move, but Corbin caught him with a right hand.

We’re back from break with Crews kicking him in the face three times and then a flying clothesline. Crews hit a splash in the corner. Corbin attacked him from behind and then landed some big strikes. Corbin with a big clothesline. Crews caught him with a running knee strike. Crews caught him with a jumping kick then a standing moonsault for 2. Corbin missed a spear and Crews hit a slam for 2. Corbin hit a slam of his own for 2. They brawled to the floor, and Crews sent Corbin into the steel steps. Back in the ring, Crews went to the top rope, but Corbin rolled out of the way. Crews landed a series of right hands. Crews walked into the End of Days for the win.

Winner: Corbin.

A video package to hype the WWE Title match between AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose was shown.

There was a graphic for those who were lost on 9/11. Welcome to the Backlash pay-per-view event. Shane McMahon walks down to the ring. McMahon then brings out Daniel Bryan.

McMahon welcomed us to the first SmackDown PPV and thanked the fans for making the show a success. McMahon said that he loves being the underdog and is giving the red team on its feet. Bryan hyped Miz vs. Ziggler and Styles vs. Ambrose. Bryan also hyped the SmackDown Tag Team Title match and SmackDown Women’s Title match.

Six Pack Challenge to crown SmackDown Live Women’s Champion: Nikki Bella vs. Becky Lynch vs. Carmella vs. Alexa Bliss vs. Natalya vs. Naomi.

They all start brawling to begin the match. Bliss went for an early cover on Bella but got 2. Natalya sent Bella to the floor. Naomi sent Natalya to the floor. Lynch and Naomi had a staredown in the ring. Lynch with an arm drag to Naomi and then worked over her left arm. Naomi with a series of kicks to Lynch. Lynch tossed Naomi to the floor. Lynch went to the top rope, but Carmella knocked her down. Carmella with a hurricanrana for 2. Natalya attacked Carmella from behind then sent her into the barricade. Back in the ring. Bliss hit a standing knee strike to Bella then knocked Natalya off the apron. Bella with a back elbow and then a springboard kick for 2. Lynch hit a series of drop kicks to Bliss then knocked down Natalya. Lynch with a splash in the corner. Natalya with a german suplex to Lynch. Naomi took out Natalya with a hurricanrana. Naomi hit full nelson bomb to Natalya then Bliss hit a knee strike to Naomi. Naomi with a kick to Bliss and Carmella with a superkick to Naomi. Bella speared Carmella and landed a series of strikes. Carmella hit a facebuster and then locked in her submission, but Bella fought out and hit an Alabama Slam for 2. Bella put her on the top rope and went for a suplex but Natalya power bombed Bella while Bella suplexed Carmella. Bliss kicked Lynch in the gut and then sent her into the corner. Bliss rolled up Lynch for 2. Carmella sent Bliss to the floor, and Bella knocked Carmella out of the ring. Bella went for an outside dive, but Carmella cut her off with a shoulder block. Naomi sent Carmella to the floor and hit an outside dive taking out all of the girls. Back in the ring, Bliss landed a series of right hands to Natalya. Naomi hit an over castle to Bliss for the elimination.

Naomi sent Natalya out of the ring after botching a move, which the fans booed. Naomi with a kick to Bella then went for a springboard move, but Bella caught her with a forearm shot. Natalya locked in the Sharpshooter on Naomi for the elimination. Carmella sent Lynch into the steel steps. Natalya hit Carmella with a clothesline and then Bella with one to Natalya. Bella hit her finisher to Natalya for the elimination. Carmella rolled up Bella for the elimination. Carmella started to slap Lynch and then put the boots to her. Lynch caught her and hit a series of suplexes. Lynch locked in the Disarmer for the win.

Winner: Lynch.

Lynch cut a promo after the match thanking all of the fans for supporting her.

Winners will face Heath Slater and Rhyno in the Tag Team Title Finals: The Usos vs. Hype Bros.

Rawley and Jey started things off. Rawley hit a back body drop to begin the match. Ryder got the tag, and so did Jimmy. Ryder hit a series of right hands. Jimmy rolled to the floor, and Ryder hit a baseball slide. Ryder hit a drop kick to Jey off the apron. Rawley hit a shoulder block on The Usos. Back in the ring, Ryder landed some more right hands to Jimmy. Jey got the blind tag and sent Ryder into the corner. Jey hit a clothesline on the floor. The Usos hit a double team move on Ryder. Jimmy got the tag and knocked Rawley off the apron. Moments later, Rawley got the hot tag and hit a series of shoulder blocks to Jey. Rawley caught Jey and hit a power slam. Rawley and Ryder went for their tag team finisher, but Jimmy dragged Rawley to the floor. Jey hit an uppercut to Ryder, but Ryder fought back with some right hands and hit a hurricanrana for 2, but Jimmy broke up the pin attempt. Ryder sent Jimmy to the floor. Ryder with a knee strike to Jey then knocked Jimmy down. Jey took out Ryder’s left knee and locked in a knee submission for the win.

Winners: The Usos.

The Miz is shown talking to Bryan backstage. Miz said that they need him, and he wants to renegotiate his contract and be paid like the superstar he is. Miz said that after he retains his IC Title, the contract negotiation will get a little tougher.

WWE Intercontinental Title Match: The Miz © vs. Dolph Ziggler

They lock up and start exchanging roll ups. Ziggler ducked a right hand and hit a drop kick. Ziggler missed a super kick, and Miz sent him throat-first into the middle rope. Miz locked in a back submission and then sent him to the floor. Miz targeted the left knee of Ziggler. Miz hit a series of drop kicks in the corner then mocked Bryan. Miz connected with a clothesline in the corner. Miz hit a double sledge off the middle rope. Miz went for the Skull Crushing Finale, but Ziggler blocked and rolled him up for 2. Ziggler with a drop kick. Ziggler hit a clothesline and then a splash in the corner followed by a neck breaker then a spine buster and an elbow for 2. Miz caught him and hit a powerbomb. Miz attacked the left knee of Ziggler and hit a series of shoulder blocks. Ziggler kicked him and then hit the fameasser for 2. Ziggler went for the Zig Zag but it was blocked, and Miz went for a slam, but Ziggler reversed it and locked in the sleeper hold. Miz fought out, but Ziggler caught him with a DDT for 2. Miz locked in the Figure Four Leg Lock, but Ziggler got to the ropes. Ziggler hit a super kick for a near fall. Miz tried to run to the back, but Ziggler tossed him back into the ring. Once back in the ring, Ziggler rolled him up for 2. Maryse sprayed hair spray in Ziggler’s face, and Miz hit the Skull Crushing Finale for the win.

Winner: The Miz.

Bray Wyatt walked out to the ring and the ring announcer said that Randy Orton couldn’t compete tonight. They then did a count of 10 and Orton was counted out, and Wyatt was awarded the win. Kane walked out, and we have a No Holds Barred match.

No Holds Barred Match: Kane vs. Bray Wyatt.

They brawled around the ring and Kane tossed him into the barricade. Kane hit a chokeslam on the steel chair. Wyatt tossed Kane to the ringside area and hit a clothesline. Wyatt put him on the announce table and hit a back splash. Back in the ring, Kane hit him with the chokeslam for 2. Orton limped down to the ring and hit an RKO to Wyatt then Kane hit a chokeslam for the win.

Winner: Kane.

WWE SmackDown Tag Team Title Match: The Usos vs. Rhyno and Heath Slater.

The Usos double teamed Slater early. They sent him back first into the ring post, and Jey tossed him back into the ring and pinned him for 2. Jey hit a dive off the top rope onto Slater. Moments later, Rhyno got the hot tag and hit a series of clotheslines to Jey. Rhyno with a belly to belly suplex. Rhyno went for a spear but missed it and hit the turnbuckle. Slater was tagged in and hit a neck breaker to both Usos. Slater hit a DDT to Jimmy for 2, but Jey pulled out Slater. Slater knocked him down and walked into a superkick by Jimmy. Rhyno hit the GORE to Jimmy for the win.

Winners: Slater and Rhyno.

WWE Title Match: Dean Ambrose © vs. AJ Styles.

They lock up to begin the match. Styles knocked him down and then put the boots to him. Ambrose rolled him up for 2 but Styles hit a forearm shot. Ambrose hit a back body drop. Styles rolled to the floor and went for a dive but Styles tripped him. Styles hit a drop kick and talked some trash. Ambrose fought back and hit a splash in the corner but Styles cut him off with a shoulder block. Styles went to the top rope and Ambrose hit a powerslam. Ambrose hit a back breaker for 2. Ambrose hit an outside dive taking out Styles. Ambrose hit a sitdown face buster on Styles once they got back into the ring. Ambrose went for a suplex but Styles reversed and hit a suplex of his own into the turnbuckle. Styles attacked the left knee of Ambrose. Styles went for the Calf Crusher but Ambrose fought out and went for a suplex but Styles blocked and locked in the Calf Crusher but Ambrose made it to the ropes. Styles locked it in again but Ambrose slammed Styles head into the mat several times to escape. Styles went for the Styles Clash but Ambrose grabbed the ropes. Styles kick him in the head. Styles went for a move on the apron but Ambrose blocked and sent him head first into the ring post. Ambrose attacked him from behind and sent him into the ring. Ambrose lands some right hands and then a splash then a bull dog for 2. Styles with a series of strikes then hit a neck breaker for 2. Ambrose fought off the Styles Clash with a back body drop. Ambrose with a splash but Styles reversed and hit a spin out powerbomb for 2. Styles hit a slam then went to the apron and went for a springboard 450 splash and hit it for a near fall. Styles with a series of right hands but Ambrose ducked and hit a neck breaker. Ambrose with a series of right hands and knee strikes. Ambrose drop kicked Styles out of the ring. Ambrose hit an outside dive sending Styles over the announce table. Ambrose tossed Styles over the barricade. Ambrose ran across the announce tables and over the barricade to take out Styles. Back in the ring, Styles kicked him in the head but Ambrose no sold it and hit a big clotheslines. Styles pushed Ambrose into the referee, hit a low blow to Ambrose and hit the Styles Clash to Ambrose for the win.

Winner: Styles.

Styles celebrated in the ring to close the show.
