AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship was one of the key matches advertised for the Backlash pay-per-view. The match was positioned earlier in the show because Vince McMahon decided that Samoa Joe vs. Roman Reigns should close out the show.
Nakamura was the first to take advantage of the No Disqualification stipulation when he brought a steel chair into the ring. Nakamura hit a reverse exploder on the chair after a series of elbows, forearms and kicks. Styles kicked out of the pin attempt. Nakamura went for the Kinshasa but Styles threw the chair into his knee to block it. The chair bounced back into Styles’ face and it cut him open.
Later, Nakamura hit Styles with a low blow but Styles fired back with his own low blow and the crowd went crazy. They traded punches and then kicked each other below the belt at the same time. The referee counted them out so the match ended in a double count-out. I guess next month it will be a No DQ and No Countout match.
