Drew McIntyre put his WWE Championship on the line against Bobby Lashley at WWE Backlash. This match was positioned earlier in the show because they wanted the main event to be the match between Edge and Randy Orton.
Here are some notes from the match:
Lashley attacked McIntyre by putting him in the Full Nelson before the match got started as referees scrambled to get Lashley to break the hold so they could start the match. Lana was shown watching the match from the backstage area.
After several minutes of offense from Lashley, McIntyre was able to hit a clothesline that knocked Lashley over the top and to the floor. McIntyre shoved Lashley into the barricade several times but Lashley turned it around and tried to hit a move with McIntyre on his back but he dropped him on the floor. Lashley then picked up McIntyre and slammed him into the steel post. Lashley also charged at McIntyre but McIntyre reversed and tossed Lashley into the barricade and then followed up with a suplex on the floor.
Back in the ring, they traded blows and McIntyre was able to gain some momentum with a series of moves. McIntyre hit a spinebuster and then went for a pin but Lashley kicked out. Lashley was able to fight back and hit a spinebuster but McIntyre kicked out at one. Lashley then drove McIntyre into the post and then he hit a flatliner but McIntyre kicked out at one. Lashley tried to lock in the Full Nelson but McIntyre resisted. Lashley ended up on the shoulders of McIntyre and then was slammed face first. McIntyre went for a pin but Lashley kicked out at two. McIntyre tried a piledriver but Lashley reversed into an ankle lock. Lashley then tried a spear but McIntyre reversed into a Kimura submission but Lashley made to the bottom rope. McIntyre hit a superplex off the top rope but he was not able to quickly go for a pin because he was hurting and exhausted. McIntyre went for the Claymore Kick but Lashley hit the spear and McIntyre kicked out of the pin attempt as Lana made her way down to the ringside area. Lana was accidentally knocked off the ring apron and onto MVP. The distraction allowed McIntyre to hit the Claymore. He pinned Lashley to retain the title.
