WWE Battleground results: John Cena vs. Rusev in a Flag match

John Cena took on Rusev at Battleground in an old school flag match. The stipulation is that the winner must grab his country flag and then bring it up the aisleway and plant it on a pedestalĀ sitting near the stage area.

Here is a quick rundown of some of the key moments from the match:

After a few minutes of back-and-forth wrestling, Rusev was the first man to grab his flag but the match was not over yet because he still needed to plant it on the pedestal. Rusev took his time and paid for it and that allowed Cena to make a comeback. At one point, Cena had the STF locked in and Rusev tapped but the match continued because the rules state that you cannot win or lose via pinfall or submission. Rusev passed out and Cena got up to grab the American flag but enough time passed for Rusev to get back up and attack Cena. The match eventually spilled to the ringside are and up the rampway. Rusev used the steel steps and smashed them on Cena’s head. Cena grabbed Rusev’s leg before he could make it up the rampway and then began beating on Rusev up the aisleway. Cena then rammed Rusev’s head into the LED screen and then attempted a dive off the pedestal but Rusev caught him and executed Scott Hall’s fallaway slam on the stage floor.

Later, Rusev grabbed the American flag stand and hit Cena with it and then locked in the Accolade submission hold. Rusev then went to grab his flag and then tried to plant it on his pedestal but Cena got up and stopped him. He tried to hit an AA off the pedestal but Rusev countered and hit a kick to the head. Then he locked in the Accolade but Cena powered out and then hit an AA off the American pedestal through two tables that were set up earlier by Rusev. Cena grabbed the American flag and planted it. Cena is the winner.
