There has been talk about doing squash matches on TV. Dave Meltzer reports that the idea is that the squash matches would be a better way to get new talent over. It’s something that has been talked about but, as you know by now, ideas change daily.
Squash matches were a staple of WWE programming in the 80s and 90s. In fact, most WWE programs featured squash matches. The syndicated shows, WWE Superstars & Wrestling Challenge, rarely featured matches between top stars because the idea was that you wanted to hold off the big matches for pay-per-views or the occasional Saturday Night’s Main Event special on NBC.
NXT has been doing squash matches. Patrick Clark was used in the jobber role on this week’s NXT. He lost to Austin Aries. It makes sense because they are building Aries for a match with No Way Jose. Clark is losing matches now but they can always begin his push once they have a storyline ready for him.
If they push forward with the squash matches on the main roster, then they would likely use some returning veterans. Dave Meltzer wrote several weeks ago that WWE wanted to bring back some former stars so that they could help get over some of the new talent. They’ve done this before. In 2002, WWE signed Goldust and “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig so that they could help get the younger talent over. Hennig lost most of his matches on WWE TV during that period.
