WWE changed plans for a top match at the Royal Rumble

As we wrote about last night, Sasha Banks will challenge Ronda Rousey for the Raw Women’s Championship at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. That wasn’t the original plan.

As reported a few weeks ago by Dave Meltzer, the original plan was for Charlotte Flair to face Rousey at the pay-per-view. They were hinting towards that match on WWE television but on this week’s Raw, there was no mention of Flair.

Apparently, Rousey’s promo about wanting to face Banks was something she really felt. Dave Meltzer provided details on today’s Wrestling Observer Radio.

“So, they’ve revamped the Royal Rumble card,” Meltzer said. “Originally it was going to be Ronda Rousey and Charlotte as they did all those interviews to build for it and that was changed. Ronda Rousey did want to work with Sasha Banks. She likes her and she thinks she’s good so that is a shoot. It’s not official that they will do a three-way at WrestleMania [with Rousey vs. Flair vs. Lynch]. I was told that it was not official, it is under consideration. Because it’s under consideration, the decision was made to pull the [Flair vs. Rousey] match from the Royal Rumble.”

If they decide against doing the three-way at Mania, there is still time to do it at one of the pay-per-views after the Rumble either at Elimination Chamber or Fastlane but it sure looks like they are leaning towards Rousey vs. Flair vs. Lynch at WrestleMania.
