WWE has clarified some of the vague rules that were announced last week regarding talent engaging with third parties.
Dave Meltzer reported this evening that talent were told today before Raw that they would be able to maintain their YouTube and Twitch accounts but they would need to do so under their real names. The company also said that they would need to be informed about their accounts.
That is a reversal from what some people were told last week. Mark Carrano told wrestlers last week that they could not use their real names.
There was no mention of Cameo but the belief among wrestlers is that they would no longer be able to use that platform. Big E indicated on Twitter today that his days on Cameo could be coming to an end.
On Saturday, WWE issued the following statement regarding third party deals:
“Much like Disney and Warner Bros., WWE creates, promotes and invests in its intellectual property, i.e. the stage names of performers like The Fiend Bray Wyatt, Roman Reigns, Big E and Braun Strowman. It is the control and exploitation of these characters that allows WWE to drive revenue, which in turn enables the company to compensate performers at the highest levels in the sports entertainment industry. Notwithstanding the contractual language, it is imperative for the success of our company to protect our greatest assets and establish partnerships with third parties on a companywide basis, rather than at the individual level, which as a result will provide more value for all involved.”
