Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens vs. Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura was the semi-main event at Sunday’s WWE Clash of Champions. Per the match stipulation, Owens and Zayn would be fired if they lost and Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan would be the special referees. Both McMahon and Bryan were in the ring and it was not made clear what would happen if there was a disputed finish.
Here is a recap of some of the key moments in the match (written in real-time as the match was happening):
Early on, there were hints of tension between McMahon and Bryan whenever there was a pin attempt. They weren’t counting at the same speed and that was causing problems. Yes, both refs were counting at the same time for the first few minutes of the match but they came to an agreement. Later, things got crazy at ringside. Bryan was “inadvertently” poked in the eye by McMahon while Owens did a running frog splash from one announcer’s table onto a second one on Nakamura. Back in the ring, Orton hit the RKO on Zayn and McMahon went to make the count but Bryan was shoved by Owens into McMahon. McMahon was upset at Bryan because the match should have been over. Orton also had an upset look on his face. Orton then hit an RKO to Owens. Zayn rolled up Orton but McMahon decided not to count to 3. As you could imagine, Bryan was pissed off and got into McMahon’s face. Zayn got another roll up and Bryan fast counted. Owens and Zayn won the match.
The announcers wondered what this meant for Bryan’s future as GM.
