WWE had to come up with alternative plans for the Triple Threat Match at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view event. WWE had advertised Bobby Lashley defending the United States Title against Matt Riddle and Keith Lee.
However, Lee wasn’t able to work the match and WWE wanted to have Lashley drop the title, but not be pinned. Thus, they needed a third person in the contest.
John Morrison vs. Ali vs. Ricochet vs. Elias took place on the pre-show with Morrison winning and replacing Lee in the title match. WWE did a finish where Riddle hit his finisher to Morrison after he had connected with a few shots with MVP’s crutch to the back of Lashley to get him out of the ring.
Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that “there was talk of a Battle Royal in the pre-show to determine the third man.” However, WWE went with the fatal 4-way match instead.
It wasn’t mentioned who else would’ve been in the battle royal. WWE booked a non-title singles match between Riddle and Morrison on Monday’s Raw, which resulted in Morrison suffering an injury.
